Error: "Schema conflict when Loading a file" when opening a model in Revit

Eden Davis Eden Davis

Issue

The user sees the following error: "The file being loaded is causing a conflict with the existing data in the model. What do you want to do?"

Schema conflict when Loading a file.png

Cause

Revit opens a model containing a schema that is loaded into memory or an add-on's extensible storage. Conflict occurs when Revit loads a second model (directly or as a link) that contains the same schema (unique identifier) but with a different definition.

Affected Software

ex. Revit

Resolution

The schema conflict error can be a weird one but does not actually cause damage to a model. Generally speaking, you would want to reach out to the developer to assist with clearing the error for the related software add-on.

If you're working in 2024, check out the following article: Schema Conflicts in Revit 2024

If you're working in an earlier version, see this article: "Schema conflict when Loading a file" when opening a model in Revit

Common fixes:

  • Make sure the add-on listed in the error is fully up to date
  • Check that all users have the same Revit version and updates installed

Finally, if you've tried everything else, use the option to "continue loading the model" (this will overwrite the schema in memory with the new schema).

If you have any further questions or want to check that clearing the schema will have no consequences, contact the add-on developer.
